The purpose of the STARS AF software is to use real-time 3-D simulation to remind learners of essential road safety rules for drivers. These rules have been divided into 3 sections, with a usage time of about 2.5 hours.
The driving exercises themselves last from between 30 seconds to 5 minutes. A VCR function is available to review the exercise as completed by the driver. At the end of each exercise, there is a commented video showing correct driving behavior.
1- THEORY
This section uses video to explore 3 essential road safety issues:
- stopping distances;
- safety distance;
- drunk driving.
The animator plays and comments the appropriate videos.
2 - PRACTICE
This section contains 6 driving exercises on roads and motorways. The instructor can change the vehicle condition (tyres, braking assistance systems, shock absorbers, etc.) as well as the weather (snow, rain, fog, sun).
Each exercise starts with a commented video describing what is expected of the driver. After each exercise, the combined use of the VCR function with the stats table gives the learner driver an accurate description of his performance, and of future corrections to make. The instructor uses a descriptive video to further clarify his comments.
3- ANALYZING YOUR DRIVING
This section features 15 freely chosen driving situations where the simulator analyzes basic driving errors (kerb position, failure to put on indicator when changing direction, etc.). Each scenario has a technical card describing both the content and the duration. Just like in the Practical section, each exercise has both a VCR function as well as an explanation/correction video.
The topics in this section are:
1.Priority situation when cars and bicycles meet at an intersection.
2.Traffic Roundabouts (you want to take an exit on the right).
3.Traffic Roundabouts (you want to go straight on).
4.Traffic roundabouts (you want to take an exit on the left).
5.Yielding right of way
6.Vehicles coming from right-hand side have priority.
7.Traffic lights.
8.Yielding priority to public transport vehicles.
9.Case of pedestrian about to cross.
10.City driving.
11.Road driving.
12.Motorway driving.
13.Road driving under foggy conditions.
14.Road driving at night time.
15.Road driving when snowing
During the analysis phase, driving errors are detected and marked using a flag on the VCR timeline:
- Positioning error.
- Indicator error.
- Driving too fast.
- Failure to stop (stop signpost traffic light)
- Failure to yield priority (right-hand side + bus pulling out)
- Poor anticipation (sudden braking)
- Entering/leaving waterways
- Failure to respect safety distances.
